Produced by the pituitary gland, TSH tells the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones (T3 and T4). High TSH usually means an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), while low TSH can indicate an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism).

T3 is the active form of thyroid hormone. "Free" T3 refers to the amount of T3 that is not bound to proteins and is available for the body's tissues to use. It plays a key role in metabolism, growth, and development.

T4 is the primary hormone produced by the thyroid gland. "Free" T4 is the unbound, active form that can enter body tissues. It's often converted into T3, the more active hormone, in various tissues.
